Few female historical figures have appeared on U.S. currency, but that’s about to change. Starting next year, the U.S. plans to put up to five prominent women on quarters annually through 2025. Coins released in 2022 will honor the achievements of Maya Angelou, a distinguished poet and writer; Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation; Adelina Otero-Warren, a leader in the women’s suffrage movement; Sally Ride, the first American woman to travel into space; and Anna May Wong, the first Chinese American movie star.
