Our Can You Find Mapman®? contest (see JS, December 7, 2020) challenged you to figure out Mapman’s mystery destination—Copenhagen, Denmark—then create a map of that country.
The winner is Anna Becker, 15, of Lenape High School in Medford, New Jersey. Congratulations to Anna and her sixth-grade teacher, Paul Devery, who introduced her to the contest four years ago.
We received nearly 3,000 entries from 36 states and Washington, D.C. Anna’s map (above) won for its bold design. “I focused on key aspects of Denmark,” says Anna. “It is the birthplace of LEGO® and hygge.” (Hygge is a Danish word that roughly means a feeling of coziness and well-being.)
Anna’s map reflects Denmark’s past and present: a Viking with a national flag, a Viking ship, a mute swan, and some of the colorful buildings you’d see in Copenhagen—all framed by a bikes-only route.
Anna and Mr. Devery will each receive $250. The 25 runners-up will each get a Mapman T-shirt. As soon as it’s safe to travel, Mapman will be off to a new mystery location. Look for next year’s contest!
