Just 12 humans have walked on the moon—all of them American men. But if all goes according to plan, an American woman will soon join that exclusive club. When NASA, the U.S. space agency, graduated its latest class in January, 5 of the 11 astronauts were female (that’s them, above!). They underwent more than two years of training in spacewalking, robotics, and flying jets. Now, with its planned Artemis mission, NASA intends to send two of its astronauts—a woman and a man—to the lunar surface by 2024. NASA hopes to follow that trailblazing trip with annual crewed flights to the moon—and then push on to Mars!
