Who: Olivia Seltzer, 16, from Santa Barbara, California

What: Started a current events newsletter for teens

After the 2016 presidential election, Olivia Seltzer’s classmates had a newfound interest in politics. Most of the news available to them, however, was written for adults. So Olivia decided to offer a teen-friendly version. She launched The Cramm, a daily newsletter for teens delivered via text and email. It quickly grew in popularity—and now she has readers in 71 countries.

Olivia wakes up every day at 5 a.m. to read the news. She chooses topics she thinks teens should know about and rewrites them, explaining everything exactly the way she would to her friends.

Her goal is to help teens understand issues the U.S. and the world face—and to inspire them to act.

“There’s a lot of hate and fear right now,” Olivia says. “I want to create a more socially conscious generation.”
