In recent years, war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa have caused nearly 2 million people to flee to Europe (see "Continent Close-Ups, Europe"). The continent has been so overwhelmed by the huge number of refugees that some countries—including Austria, Hungary, and Poland—have refused to accept them.

This cartoon comments on the situation. Study it, then answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Who or what does the man in the cartoon represent? How can you tell?

2. How would you describe his expression? Explain.

3. What is pouring out of the faucet?

4. Why might the wrench have been drawn falling out of the man’s hand?

5. What point do you think the cartoonist is trying to make about the refugee crisis in Europe?
