A groundbreaking new sports stadium is under construction in Kansas City, Missouri. The facility will be the world’s first stadium specifically built for a women’s professional sports team. The Kansas City Current, part of the National Women’s Soccer League, will begin playing in the facility this spring. Officials estimate the venue will bring about $1 billion to the area through tourism and job creation.

The stadium represents a big milestone in women’s sports, says Quinton Lucas, the mayor of Kansas City. Until now, all women’s professional teams have used facilities originally built for men. Lucas told reporters: “This interest in women’s professional sports—our respect for them, our love for them, our investment—is something that’s permanent.”
