Our Can You Find Mapman®? contest from December 2022 challenged readers to figure out Mapman’s destination—Barbados—and create a map of that Caribbean nation.
We received about 2,000 entries from 34 states. The grand-prize winner is Monica Chen of Amity Middle School in Orange, Connecticut. The 14-year-old won for her entry’s bold design. “It feels unreal to win,” Monica says. “I was a runner-up last year, so my family, friends, and teachers encouraged me to enter again.”
Drawn on top of a vivid sunset, Monica’s map (above) is flanked by a flying fish, a mahi-mahi, and a brown pelican. The Pride of Barbados, a small shrub, wraps around the island. A sand dollar, a two-spined sea star, and an elkhorn coral appear on a beach below the national flag.
Congratulations to Monica and her teacher, Jennifer Marganski. They will each receive $250. The runners-up will each get a Mapman T-shirt. Mapman will soon head off to a new location. Look for our contest again next school year!
