Jim McMahon, aka Mapman®, is Junior Scholastic's cartographer (mapmaker). This past summer, he went on a road trip to our country’s first national park, which is famous for its unique geographic features. Each year, millions of visitors flock to this park to see its rainbow-hued hot springs and geysers—a type of hot spring that shoots steam and water as high as 180 feet into the air. The park also features mud pots, pools of highly acidic muddy water that smell like rotten eggs.
Mapman traveled to the national park, established in 1872, to experience these geological wonders in person. To get there, he had to drive through a few states in the Northern Great Plains. Situated in the center of the United States, the area includes North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska, as well as the eastern halves of Montana and Wyoming.
