Rhino Rescue
Jim McMahon/Mapman®
This white rhino might look like it’s in trouble, but it’s actually being rescued. It was one of 40 rhinos recently transported by armed guards from South Africa to Botswana after being sedated and dehorned by veterinarians to make it less vulnerable to poachers. In South Africa, poachers kill a rhino every 8.5 hours for its horns, which can fetch tens of thousands of dollars on the black market. (Some people mistakenly believe rhino horn has healing properties.) Botswana has one of the lowest rates of poaching in Africa.
