NASA hopes that when the first humans visit the Red Planet—perhaps as early as 2030—they’ll cruise around in something like this new vehicle. The prototype is made of carbon fiber, a tough material that’s perfect for a rocky planet. It also has a mobile lab for astronauts to collect specimens. Why showcase the rover now? “The first person who will set foot on Mars has already been born,” says NASA spokesperson Rebecca Shireman. “We want young people to see this vehicle and be inspired.”
