The United States is often referred to as a nation of immigrants, and new data from the U.S. Census Bureau proves it. According to a recent survey, the immigrant population in the U.S.—those here both legally and illegally—hit a record high of 43.7 million in 2016. That’s about 14 percent of the total U.S. population. And, as this graph shows, the number of immigrants in the U.S. is projected to continue growing through 2020.
