In our Can You Find Mapman®? contest (see JS, January 6, 2020), we challenged you to figure out Mapman’s mystery destination—Lion Rock, Sri Lanka—then create a map of the country.

The grand-prize winner is Isla Day, 14, of the Bay School in Blue Hill, Maine. Congratulations to Isla and her teacher, Ian Chittenden.

We received nearly 3,500 entries from 33 states. Isla’s map (above) won for its clever design. “I know how important elephants are to Sri Lanka,” Isla says, “so I drew one of them creating the country by spraying water with its trunk.”

Isla’s colorful map features some of the things you’ll find in that South Asian country along with its national flag: carved masks, Buddha statues, and elephants.

Isla and her teacher will each receive $250. The 25 runners-up will each get a Mapman T-shirt. Mapman will soon head off to a new mystery location. Look for our contest in JS next year!
